KEIKI AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT program

The Keiki Afterschool Enrichment Programs (KAEPs) were established by Hale Halawai in 2020 to address the need for consistent afterschool care on Kaua'i's North Shore. Since then, we have continued to provide reliable care alongside programs designed to meet the unique needs of keiki and families in our community. Rooted in Hawaiian values, our KAEPs emphasize social-emotional learning and foster an inclusive environment where every child feels free to be themselves. Open to K-12 students, our programs align with the Department of Education calendar, running from 1:30 to 5 PM. We offer a convenient pick-up service from Hanalei School and flexible attendance options, with registration based on availability. To ensure all keiki have access, we ask for cancellations five hours in advance to accommodate others. Registration is open year-round, with payment options including credit cards and bank transfers. We also provide financial assistance to low-income families.

Here is a brief snapshot of some of our programs:
  • Art Class: incorporates the fundamentals of visual arts to guide keiki in expressing themselves and fostering creativity, using materials sourced from the ʻāina.
  • Cooking Class: offers a holistic approach to understanding nutrition by combining time in the garden with hands-on experience in the kitchen, fostering a deeper connection between keiki and the ʻāina. We use our local Kumu and Tiana Kamen's "Farm to Keiki" curriculum to guide our lessons.
  • Tutoring services provide personalized 30-minute one-on-one sessions with a DOE-licensed educator, specializing in K-6 Math and K-12 Language Arts.
  • The Jr. Leader program is a skills-based initiative designed for keiki aged 12-17 who aspire to enter the workforce once eligible. Participants develop essential skills like resume building, interviewing techniques, and workplace professionalism. We collaborate with local organizations to offer opportunities for youth to shadow, intern, and gain work experience in the community.
  • Aloha Fridays are our Beach Days, where keiki can enjoy activities like swimming, surfing, bodyboarding, building sandcastles, and playing volleyball.
